D-Day Recce by David Pentland. (PC) Juno Beach, Normandy, 6th June 1944. Sdkfz 232 armoured cars of 12th SS Reconnaissance Battalion commanded by Obersturmfuhrer Peter Hansmann observe the Canadian beachhead at Juno Beach. His small team was tasked with finding out if an invasion was actually underway and it drove some 80km, arriving at the coast near Tracy at 7.30 in the morning to witness the landings in progress. |
First to Fall by Ivan Berryman (PC) The first Luftwaffe aircraft shot down during operations against the United Kingdom was on 26 September 1939. A Dornier Do18D flying boat (‘M7+YK’, Werk Nr.0731) of 2/Kistenfliegergruppe 506 was shot down by a Blackburn Skua of No.803 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, operating from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal, north of the Great Fisher Bank at approximate co ordinates 57.36N, 02.38E. The Blackburn Skua was crewed by Lieutenant B. S. McEwen and his air gunner Acting Petty Officer B. M. Seymour. Lt. zur See Ernst K6rner and the crew of the Dornier were rescued by the destroyer HMS Somali (taken as PoWs) and the aircraft, which was still afloat, is sunk by gunfire. |

Tribute to Helmut Lent by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Joining the Luftwaffe in 1936, Helmut Lent flew Me110s with ZG76, claiming victories in the invasion of Poland. It was as a night-fighter pilot that he excelled - the second highest scoring night Ace in history - scoring more than 100 victories for which he was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. He scored victories from 1941 to 1944 with NJG1, NJG2 and NJG3 before he was fatally wounded in an accident when the Ju88 he was transporting struck overhead wires on a hastily prepared makeshift runway as he came in to land. He is depicted here in his Me110 G4 approaching a Lancaster over France in 1943. |
Kapitanleutnant zur See Friedrich Christiansen by Ivan Berryman. (PC) During a patrol on 6th July 1918, Christiansen spotted a British submarine on the surface of the Thames Estuary. He immediately turned and put his Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 floatplane into an attacking dive, raking the submarine C.25 with machine gun fire, killing the captain and five other crewmen. This victory was added to his personal tally, bringing his score to 13 kills by the end of the war, even though the submarine managed to limp back to safety. Christiansen survived the war and went on to work as a pilot for the Dornier company, notably flying the giant Dornier Do.X on its inaugural flight to New York in 1930. He died in 1972, aged 93. |

Roundheads Returning From a Raid by Ernest Crofts. (PC) Parliamentarian Cavalry shown returning from a sortie. The name Roundhead was given to the supporters of Parliament during the English civil war . The name, which originated in1641, and referred to the short haircuts most of the Roundheads had. |

Counter Attack at Konigsberg by David Pentland (PC) German forces encircled in the fortress town of Konigsberg by 3rd Ukranian front prepare to break through the besieging Soviet lines to re-establish a supply line to the Baltic. Here some Stug III assault guns move up to their assembly area next to the towns World War One memorial. From here the attack was launched on February 18th 1945 and successfully opened a supply corridor which remained in place until 8th April. |
Boarding the San Nicolas by Chris Collingwood. (PC) Nelson's sailors and marines board the San Nicolas and during heavy hand to hand fighting capture the ship. Nelson drives HMS Captain onto the Spanish vessel in order that she can be boarded and taken as a prize, the British marines and men scrambling up the Captain's bowsprit to use it as a bridge. The San Nicolas then fouled the Spanish three-decker San Joseph, allowing Nelson and his men to take both ships as prizes in a single manoeuvre. |

The Young Stallion by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Italy's highest-scoring flying ace of WW1 was Francesco Baracca, seen here on the morning of 3rd June 1917, claiming his 13th victim, a Hansa-Brandenburg C.1 two-seater of the Austro-Hungarian Army Air Force above the Isonzo River, near to Plava. His yellow Spad S.VII was easily identifiable by the elegant prancing horse emblem that was painted on the fuselage sides of all his aircraft. Having achieved a total of 34 aerial victories, Baracca was killed in action during the Battle of the Piave, his Spad being shot down by an enemy Phönix C.1 close to the Montello. When his body was recovered from the burned-out remains of his aircraft, he was found to have a bullet hole in his skull and his pistol in his hand. Whether he committed suicide to avoid burning to death or was shot after crashing is unknown. In 1923, Baracca's mother, Countess Paolina, donated the prancing horse emblem to Enzo Ferrari, whose cars have carried this iconic symbol ever since. |
The Charge Of The Seventh Cavalry by Frank Feller (PC) The 7th Cavalry, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, was a U.S. Army regiment known for its role in the Indian Wars during the late 19th century. It gained notoriety for its involvement in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in June 1876, where Custer and his forces faced a combined coalition of Native American tribes, resulting in a disastrous defeat for the 7th Cavalry and the death of Custer and most of his men. This battle became emblematic of the conflicts between the U.S. government and Native American tribes during westward expansion. |
No Way Back by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Despite crippling damage to their Lancaster ED925 (G), the crew of AJ-M continued to press home their attack on the Mohne Dam on the night of 16th/17th May 1943. With both port engines ablaze, Flt Lt J V Hopgood forced his blazing aircraft on, releasing the Upkeep bomb just precious seconds too late to strike the dam, the mine instead bouncing over the wall and onto the power station below with devastating results. ED925 attempted to recover from the maelstrom, but the fuel fire was too intense and the aircraft was tragically lost, just two of her crew managing to escape the impact to spend the rest of the war as PoWs. |

Tribute to Fl Off Tom Neil by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Flying Officer Tom Neil closes on a Dornier Do.17 on 15th September 1940, just one of four victories confirmed on that day, the others being two Bf.109s and another Dornier shared. He is depicted flying Hurricane Mk1 V7313 of 249 Sqn whilst based at North Weald. |
Unexpected encounter at Niergnies, France, 8th October 1918 by David Pentland. (PC) Towards the end of the second battle of Cambrai, British Mark IV tanks of 12th Battalion confronted German captured Mark IVs. The ensuing battle was chaotic, emerging from smoke the Germans were initially mistaken as part of C Company, but at 50 meters both sides recovered from their surprise and opened fire simultaneously. The lead British tank L16 commanded by Captain Rowe was immediately knocked out, who escaped with his men to L19 just in time to see it destroyed, along with L12. The remaining tank L8 had broken down some distance back taking no part in the battle, although its commander Lieutenant Martel managed to use a captured 77mm artillery piece to finally halt the German tank. |
Last Dogfight of Werner Voss by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The air battle that took place above the trenches of France on the evening of 23rd September 1917 was to go down in history as one of the most extraordinary dogfights ever. The young German ace Werner Voss found himself engaged with no fewer than eleven SE5s of 56 Sqn, among them British aces such as James McCudden and Arthur Rhys Davids. Hugely outnumbered, the brave Voss saw off several British aircraft with his amazing airmanship and accuracy of fire. Again and again he could have fled the scene due to his Triplanes superior rate of climb, but his attacks were insistent and deadly. His final moments came when Rhys Davids found himself on the tail of Voss and fired both his Lewis and Vickers guns into the little turqoise Triplane which was seen to drift toward the ground, his aircraft inverting before impact, killing Voss instantly. The painting shows Voss distinctive pre-production Fokker F. 1, with the yellow nose of Jasta 10, being pursued by the SE5 of Rhys Davids while, high above,a Spad is helping to keep a gaggle of Albatross DVs at bay. |
Victory near Podgorica by Ivan Berryman. (PC) As the invading forces took hold in Italy, many Italian pilots transferred their allegiance to the Aeronautica Co-Beligerante, among them Maggiore Teresio Martinoli who was to become Italy's highest scoring ace with 22 victories, before being tragically killed in a training accident. He is depicted here claiming a Ju.52 in the skies of Yugoslavia whilst flying the exceptional Macchi MC.205 Veltro. |

Outbound from Mildenhall by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Short Stirling III EH990 is depicted heading out over the North Sea on the evening of 7th October 1943, on a mine-laying sortie off the Frisian Islands. LS-K was piloted, on this occasion, by Fl/Sg Thomas Robertson Ewen, RAFVR on his first - and sadly only - mission as pilot, his aircraft falling victim to a marauding enemy night fighter. |
