Tribute to Friedrich Noltenius by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Studying medicine at the outbreak of World War One, Friedrich Noltenius was a decorated artillery soldier by the time he started flying missions in mid-1918. Flying with Jasta 27, he scored 13 victories before transferring to Jasta 6 in September 1918. A noted balloon buster, he is shown here in his personalised Fokker D.VII of Jasta 6 during October 1918. Scoring a total of 21 victories by the end of the war, his 20th entitled him to the award of the Blue Max to add to his Württemberg Knight's Cross, but the end of the war prevented him from receiving it. After the war he returned to medicine and became a doctor, but was killed in a flying accident in 1936. |
Tribute to Bob Stanford Tuck by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Shown here stalking a marauding German bomber in Hurricane V6555 DA-T of No.257 Sqn, Bob Stanford Tuck was one of Britain's greatest Aces of the war, claiming 29 victories before being shot down and taken prisoner early in 1942. |
Tribute to Alfred Grislawski by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Credited with more than 130 victories in World War Two, Alfred Grislawksi scored 24 of these on the Western Front. He is depicted here flying his Me109 with JG53 in what would be his last combat on 26th September 1944. Having shot down a P-38 Lightning earlier in the day, he was shot down in the combat shown by the P-51 Mustang of American Ace Hub Zemke and bailed out. Opening his parachute very low for fear of being shot at, he landed hard and damaged vertebrae, and did not recover before the end of the war. Awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, he died in 2003 aged 83. |
Battle Over Bembridge by Ivan Berryman. (PC) At the very height of the Battle of Britain in August 1940, there was a great deal of furious fighting above and around the Isle of Wight. Monday 12th was an especially busy day for RAF Fighter Command, not least the Hurricanes of 601 Sqn, one of whom claimed this Messerschmitt Bf.110 in the skies above Bembridge, the two crew Staffel Kapitan Hptmn. Kulbel and his observer Offz. Budig losing their lives as their aircraft plunged into the sea. |
Tribute to Dieter Hrabak by Ivan Berryman. (PC) An Me109 pilot, Dieter Hrabak scored a victory during the Battle of France, 15 more during the Battle of Britain, commanded JG54 and JG52 and survived the war scoring a total of 125 victories. He is shown here flying Bf109 G-6 of JG52, Krakow, Poland in 1944. After the war he was instrumental in rebuilding the German Air Force, retiring in 1970. He died in 1995. |
Out of the Blue by Ivan Berryman. (PC) When first posted to Kommando Nowotny based at Achmer, Germany, in October 1944, Leutnant Franz Schall was already credited with a stunning 117 victories, but his score continued to rise as he mastered the beautiful Messerschmitt Me262 jet fighter, adding a further 16 Allied aircraft to his tally including P.51 Mustangs, P.47 Thunderbolts and B.24 Liberators. Having survived a near fatal encounter when both engines of his aircraft seized in combat, he was killed in a landing accident in 1945 whilst posted to JG.7. Mädchen für Alles by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Translated as Maid of all Work. Junkers Ju.88A-1 4D+DC of Stab II./KG 30 Eagle Wing is depicted attacking a requisitioned Royal Navy trawler in the English Channel in the summer of 1940. |
Tribute to Giovanni Ancillotto by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Italian Ace Giovanni Ancillotto scored a total of eleven victories during the Great War. This total includes two pioneering night-fighter victories in the summer of 1918. He is best known for his third balloon-busting victory in late 1917, however, during which his Nieuport 11 was severely damaged as he pressed home his attack with rockets, collecting much of the burning balloon with his aircraft. He is shown here during a previous balloon-busting victory with the empty launch tubes of 8 Le Prieur rockets testament to the fate of the enemy balloon. Giovanni Ancillotto was highly decorated and survived the war, but was killed in a car accident in 1924. |
Charity by David Pentland. (PC) Malta, 22nd June 1940. Some 12 days after the air battle for Malta began, the recently raised ad hoc Gladiator flight claimed its first confirmed victory. Flt. Lt. George Burges, and Flg. Off. Timber Woods were alerted to a lone S.79 from 219 Squadriglia on a reconnaissance sortie. They managed to intercept the intruder over Valetta, and although Timber's first attack was unsuccessful, Burges in Charity shot off the Savoia's port engine sending it crashing into the sea at Kalafrana. |
Tribute to Georges Lachmann by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Georges Lachmann was a French Ace pilot credited with a total of 9 victories during World War One. He is shown here in his Spad S.VII armed with Le Prieur rockets lining up to claim one of four balloon victories, this being one of the three balloons he claimed in Russia in late 1917. Notable for becoming an Ace while surviving as a serving pilot from the beginning to the end of the war, he lived into his 70s and died in 1961. |
The Long Way Home by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On the night of 12/13th August 1942, Short Stirling RF325 was attacked by a Bf.110 night fighter over the Ardennes in Belgium whilst returning from a bombing raid. Damaged and low on fuel, Sqn Ldr G A Watt nursed his stricken aircraft across the English Channel before making a forced landing at Broadstairs in Kent. This was a scenario faced by hundreds of Bomber Command aircrew throughout World War II and this painting is intended as a tribute to them all, symbolising the loneliness and vulnerability of the heavy bomber as it went about its unenviable task on an almost nightly basis and in the face of impossible odds. |
Tribute to Ltn d R Josef Jacobs by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Shown here is the unusual aircraft Fokker D.II 541/16 of Ace Ltn d R Josef Jacobs painted in a blue colour in October 1916. According to his diary of this time when Fokkerstaffel West was transitioning to Jasta 12, he was ill but was given permission to drive to Chauny where he found his aircraft had been painted in this colour scheme. Jacobs was a high scoring Ace of World War One - his official 48 victories putting him in the top 5 Axis pilots. He survived the war and lived to the age of 84. |
Last Stand at Calais by David Pentland. (PC) British Cruiser Mark IA CS (A9) tanks and Bren Carriers of A Squadron, 3RTR, 1st Armoured Division, line the road south of Calais, prior to being sent south to secure the bridges on the St. Omer canal. The British column of tanks failed to reach its objective, encountering the advance guard of 1st Panzer Division near the little village of Hames-Boucre, and after an inconclusive afternoon battle fell back towards Calais in the early evening. |
USS United States, 1812 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Still showing some signs of her encounter with HMS Macedonian on 25th October 1812 and under the command of Captain Stephen Decatur, USS United States is shown surging through a heavy Atlantic swell en route for Newport, Rhode Island, which she would eventually reach on 4th December, in company with the Macedonian, who she had so decisively defeated and taken as a prize. |
Tribute to Hans-Ulrich Rudel by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The most highly-decorated Luftwaffe pilot, Hans-Ulrich Rudel is the sole recipient of the Golden Oak Leaves supplementary award to the Knight's Cross, to add to the Swords and Diamonds. These awards reflect his quite incredible achievements with the Ju87 Stuka dive-bomber - he flew more than 2,000 missions, claiming more than 500 tanks amongst around 1,500 ground targets destroyed, plus a battleship, cruiser, destroyer and other shipping, as well as a number of trains. Additionally, he flew more than 400 missions in the Fw190 fighter, and is credited with 11 air victories. He lost a leg in combat near the end of the war and was later captured by the Allies, remaining in a POW camp until 1946. He is depicted here in his Ju87 lining up for an attack amongst the snowy landscape of the Eastern Front. Hans-Ulrich Rudel died in 1982. |
The Final Flight by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On 31st May 1954, Saunders-Roe's beautiful SR.45 Princess flying boat made her final flight, taking off from the Cowes Roads for a short test flight for radio checks and to investigate how the ten-engine giant responded to engine cuts. By all accounts, the tests passed without incident and this graceful machine returned to her slipway at the East Cowes works, never to take to the air again. Orders for this extraordinary aircraft failed to materialise and G-ALUN and her two sister airframes were eventually scrapped at Calshot. |
Tribute to Hans-Georg von der Marwitz by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Credited with a total of 15 aerial victories, Hans-Georg von der Marwitz is shown here in his distinctive burgundy Pfalz D.III he flew as commander of Jagdstaffel 30 around the spring of 1918. The son of a Cavalry General and commander of Germany's Second Army, he began a military career in the cavalry, before moving to infantry regiments and then training as a bomber then fighter pilot. He survived the war but was killed in an air accident in 1925. |
Tribute to Frank Carey by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Frank Carey, depicted here in his Hurricane of No.43 Squadron, was one of Britain's top Aces of the war. He scored over 20 confirmed victories as well as several shared or probable claims - these were in Europe during the Battle of France and Battle of Britain, but also later in the war in the east against the Japanese during their invasion of Burma. He was awarded a CBE in addition to his Distinguished Flying Cross with two bars, Distinguished Flying Medal and Air Force Cross. |
The Chain by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Spitfire Mk.1 over a trio of Chain radar masts on the south coast of England. This Spitfire is from No.603 Sqn based at RAF Hornchurch from 27th August 1940, the height of the Battle of Britain. |
Tribute to Oblt Kurt Student by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Kurt Student was a pilot before the beginning of World War One and served throughout the conflict, scoring 6 aerial victories. He served with several squadrons including as commander of Jasta 9, and is shown here in his Fokker E.IV. He went on to be a high-ranking officer in the Luftwaffe during World War Two, and was instrumental in creating the German paratroop force. He was later convicted of war crimes associated with the invasion of Crete by his paratroops - he died in 1978. |
Tribute to Hans-Joachim Buddecke by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Hans-Joachim Buddecke was only the third ace to be awarded the Blue Max (after Max Immelmann and Oswald Boelcke), and was credited with a total of thirteen confirmed victories and many more unconfirmed. Seen here flying with Jasta 4 in a Halberstadt D.V in 1916 on the Western Front, he had previously flown Fokker Eindeckers here, and had served in Bulgaria and Gallipoli. He was shot down and killed in March 1918. |
