Tragedy Over the Alps by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On the night of 13th August 1943, Short Stirling EF452 of 218 Sqn was part of a bombing raid to Turino in Italy. As the Squadron cleared the Alps the tail gunner of one of the aircraft mistook EF452 for an enemy fighter and immediately opened fire with great accuracy. The windshield fragmented and was partially blasted away, 3 engines were hit and one had to be shut down. The Navigator was hit and killed, the pilot was severely wounded taking hits in the face, right arm and chest, the bomb aimer and flight engineer were also wounded. The Flight Engineer pulled the slumped pilot off the controls and managed to pull the aircraft out of its dive at approximately 4000 feet. The Bomb Aimer took over the controls and turned south over the Mediterranean for another allied airfield knowing the aircraft wouldn’t be able to climb back over the Alps. Although grievously wounded, the young Pilot assisted the Bomb Aimer as best he could, slipping in and out of consciousness and scribbling notes, as his jaw was broken. The Bomb Aimer managed to crash land with the landing gear up on the airfield at Bone, Algeria. The brave young pilot who refused to be treated, succumbed to his wounds later that afternoon. Pilot Flight Sergeant Arthur Louis Aaron DFM was awarded the Victoria Cross, whilst RCAF Bomb Aimer Flight Sergeant Alan William Jessup Larden was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying) and Flight Engineer Sergeant Malcolm Mitchem was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. |
Tribute to General Witold Urbanowicz by Ivan Berryman (PC) General Witold Urbanowicz was the second highest Polish Fighter ace with 17 confirmed kills and 13 Victories scored during the Battle of Britain flying with No. 303 Polish Kosciuszko Squadron. Nine of them while flying Hawker Hurricane Mk.I RF-E/P3901 as shown in this painting. He was the only Polish Air Force pilot to be credited with 2 kills of Japanese Army Air Force Ki-43 aircraft. |
Lancaster Attack by David Pritchard. (PC) 12th Janaury 1945 and the Lancatsers of 9 and 617 squadrons are once again taking their deadly cargo of Tallboy bombs over enemy territory. This time it is the turn of the U boat pens at Bergen in Norway. En route home the bombers are bounced by FW 190s of JG5. One of the Luftwaffe Pilots in White1, Heinze Owlowski, believes he has made a fatal attack on Lancaster KC-M piloted by Squadron Leader Tony Iveson. He salutes the crew before doing a victory roll in front of the badly damaged bomber. However, thanks to the bravery and skill of its young pilot the Lancaster would actually make it home to a force land on 3 engines at Dumburgh in the Shetland Isles. A feat for which the Squadorn Leader Iveson recieved his D.F.C. |
Retreat from Moscow by Fraciszek Kostrzewski (PC) Depicted here, a scene from Napoleon's retreat from Moscow after a failed invasion. The retreat led to further losses as many men starved, froze to dead or died from disease. The catastrophic failure would be a lasting scar on Napoleon's image of being an undefeatable persence in Europe and the mass casualties in his ranks would greatly reduce his Grande Armee's effectiveness. |

Wellington Attack by David Pritchard. (PC) On the night of 12th/ 13th August 1941 No.9 Squadron, in their Wellington Bombers, are once again taking the war into the heartland of Nazi Germany, WS-G Skipper Flt/Lt Kenneth Ball fights to keep her straight and level through the intense flack that surrounds the target, while his front gunner Sgt Cyril Chandler tries in vain to take on the menace of the search lights that seek their Wellington. Both aircraft coded WS-G and WS-Z would be listed as Failed to Return from this mission. |
The Steelhorse by David Pentland (PC) Polish Armoured train No.11, "Danuta", Poznan Army, September 1939. The Polish armoured trains such as "Danuta" were powerful weapons. They where considered state of the art having been upgraded in the 1930’s and made up of 2 twin artillery wagons an assault wagon and 5 TKS tankettes used foe scouting. |
The Old Soldier by Ivan Berryman (PC) An Old Knight of the Teutonic Order after many years of service, having fought the crusades in the Holy Land and returned to Europe to continue the battle against pagans in the Baltic states, he is shown wearing the distinctive black cross on his white cloak. |

(PC) On the 10th December 1943 Mosquito HX966 along with HX975 of 487 sqn (RNZAF) Took off at 12:45 hrs for sweep mission to RutenbrUck, HX866 Flow by F/O Michael Lewis Brownlow Frankson (pilot) RAFVR and Navigator P/O David Edward Cake RAFVR Crashed in front of the Purit factory (now NORIT) near Klazienaveen, both crew members were killed. |
The Tenacious Belleisle by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Few ships fought more bravely than HMS Belleisle at the Battle of Trafalgar. Having been second in the line of Collingwood’s leeward division, the 74-gun Belleisle took on a number of opponents including the Monarca, Santa Ana and Indomtable, but soon found herself surrounded by enemy ships that poured weighty broadsides into her. By 2.30 in the afternoon, Bellisle was little more than a floating wreck, having lost all of her masts and bowsprit, yet still she fought bravely on, her colours flying defiantly from the stump of her mizzen mast. Belleisle survived her ordeal and was towed to Gibraltar after the battle where temporary repairs were made, arriving in Plymouth for a refit on 5th December 1805. |

Nerves of Steel by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Just moments from her devastating opening broadside, HMS Victory prepares to pass the stern of the French flagship, Bucentaure, to break through the line of the combined French and Spanish fleets as the Battle of Trafalgar begins on 21st October 1805. Victorys guns had remained silent until this moment, Lord Nelsons flagship having already suffered severe damage during the approach, but now the gun crews awaited the moment when her double-shotted cannon, her mighty 68-pounder carronade and a shower of musket balls would smash through the French vessel, rendering it at once a useless hulk. |

Tribute to Sqn Ldr Eugeniusz Horbaczewski by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On 16 February 1944 Horbaczewski took command of the Polish No. 315 Squadron, flying the new P-51 Mustang Mk. III. On 12 June 1944 he shot down a FW 190, and on 30 July one Bf 109 individually and one with his wingman (counted as a 0.5 'share'). |
A Moment of Compassion by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On December 20th 1943, Lt. Charlie Brown of the USAAF was flying his first mission as aircraft commander of B-17, "Ye Olde Pub" on a bombing raid over Bremen. The B-17's port wing was damaged by flak, necessitating an engine shutdown. The aircraft was aggressively attacked by Luftwaffe fighters that tore the B-17 to shreds, killing and wounding a number of her crew. As the aircraft limped toward the German coast, a single Messerschmitt Bf 109 piloted by Franz Stigler approached the crippled bomber and, seeing the incredible damage inflicted on it, made the decision not to attack, but to escort0 the B-17 across the English Channel. Part way, the Bf 109 banked away and Brown's aircraft was met by some P.47s that escorted Ye Olde Pub home. Stigler had risked everything in this act of compassion and his story remained a secret until the end of the war. In 1990, Charlie Brown finally tracked down Franz Stigler and the two pilots became the closest of friends, right up until they would sadly pass away within months of each other in 2008. |

The A34 "Black Prince", was a British experimental development of the Churchill infantry tank armed with a 17 pounder. Although 6 prototypes were built, the project was dropped in favour of the new Centurion medium tank. |
The Battle of the Alamo by Edward Percy Moran (PC) The Battle of the Alamo, fought in 1836 during the Texas Revolution, was a 13 -day siege where a small group of Texas defenders held out against a much larger Mexican army. Despite their eventual defeat, the battle became a symbol of bravery and resistance. |
