Operation Manna by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

During the years of the German occupation of Holland in World War II, more than 20,000 Dutch civilians perished through starvation and lack of basic provisions. Operation Manna was set in motion on Sunday, 29th April 1945 when Lancasters of the Royal Air Force began the first of 2,835 sorties, dropping 6,672 tons of food, to relieve the crisis in the Netherlands. These humanitarian missions continued until 8th May, saving many thousands of civilians from certain death by starvation and malnutrition. Here, Lancaster 4K765, LS-Z of 15 Sqn piloted by Flying Officer Jack Darlow, releases its precious cargo over a sports field north of The Hague. Also in the crew was Alistair Lamb the Rear Gunner.

Close Combat - The 31st Victory by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Barely 300m above the distinctively meandering Piave River on 17th April 1918, an intense aerial battle took place between Sopwith Camels of 28 Sqn RFC and pilots of Flik 41J of the Austro-Hungarian Air Force near Arcade, north east of Venice. The Commander of Flik 41J, Godwin von Brumowski, the Austro-Hungarian 'Ace of Aces', dueled with Lieutenant W C Hargrave, flying Camel B6342, a battle in which the distinctive red Albatros D.III (Oef) 153.45, emblazoned with its identifying skull motifs gained the upper hand, sending Lt Hargrave's machine to the ground to claim victory number 31. This 'kill' was shared that day with Oblt Friedrich Navratil, the first of his 10 victories, whose aircraft can be seen in the distance.

The Queen's Birthday Parade at Whitehall by William Barnes Wollen. (PC)

On this occasion the colours are 'trooped' with great ceremony. The 'Escort for the Colour', of the Grenadier Guards, is 'presenting arms' before receiving it.

The Decisive Moment at Waterloo by Robert Hillingford. (PC)

Napoleon questioning a captured Prussian Soldier, and at this point not believing that the Prussians were so close.

Hannes Trautloft by Graeme Lothian. (PC)

Hannes Truatloft is shown here leading Fw190s of JG54 over the Russian Front. Hannes Trautloft is one of the Luftwaffes great fighter leaders, scoring his first air victory in the Spanish Civil War in August 1936. Returning to Germany in 1937 he joined the national aerobatics team flying the Me109. Soon after the outbreak of World War II, Hannes took command of I./JG20 taking part in the Battle of Britain, before moving to the Balkans as Kommodore of JG54. Now leading the group on the Russian Front, JG54 took part in the heavy fighting, first in the Me109, then the Fw190. In the summer of 1943 Hannes Trautloft joined General Gallands staff. As a mutineer he was sacked by Goering, thus ending an illustrious combat career comprising 550 combat missions and 57 aerial victories.

Moving Mountains - Tribute to Maggiore Vittorio Minguzzi and 22° Gruppo Autonomo by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The defense of Naples and southern Italy in World War Two was a desperate affair for the Regia Aeronautica who found themselves massively outnumbered as the Allied invasion progressed. Based at nearby Napoli-Capodichino, the Macchi 202s of 22° Gruppo Autonomo suffered terrible losses whilst trying to defend the port against the Allied heavy bombers, but nevertheless pressed home spirited attacks on the B-24s and their escorts. Here, Italian ace Maggiore Vittorio Minguzzi leads a trio of M.202s around the iconic crater of Mount Vesuvius.

Deadly Combo by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Equipped with the Henschel Hs.293 guided bomb, the Dornier Do.217s of KG 40 and KG 100 represented a new and significant threat to Allied shipping. The first such victims were the sloop HMS Egret and the destroyer HCMS Athabaskan, both in the Bay of Biscay in August 1943. Although crude and needing to be guided to their target by an operator in the launch aircraft, the Hs.293s introduced a new breed of air-launched weapon to modern warfare, a concept that is still in use to this day.
