The Heroic Eleonore Prochaska Falling at the Battle of the Gohrde By Carl Rochling (PC) Eleonore Prochaska was a Prussian soldier who gained recognition for disguising herself as a man to enlist in the military during the Napoleonic Wars. She fought bravely and served in several battles becoming a symbol of female courage in a time when women were not allowed to serve openly in the armed forces. Prochaska was wounded at Battle of the Gohrde on the 16th of September, 1813 and died from her injuries. |

The Battle of Mir on 9th of July 1812 by Nikolai Pavlovich Krasovsky (PC) A cavalry engagement at the battle of Mir, between Russian Cossacks under the command of General Matvei Platov and Polish lancers of the 4th Light Cavalry Division under the command of General Aleksander Rozniecki, who were part of Napoleons Grand Army. The Russian victory at Mir marked the first major victory for the Russian forces during Napoleons campaign in Russia. Taken from the original book plate published in 1912. |

The 5th Division Storming the Ramparts of San Vincente by Harry Payne (PC) Badajoz, 6th April 1812 in North West Spain on the River Guadiana. The siege began on the 17th March and was finally captured on 6th April. The British lost more than 4,800 men, pictured here are the 5th Division attacking the bastion after a delay due to losing their ladder party. Taken from the original book plates published in 1909. |
The Night Watch by Ivan Berryman. (PC) A Roman legionary was a professional soldier of the Roman army. Often praised for their fighting effectiveness and tactical prowess, they were the foremost fighting unit of the Roman Empire. A legionary would typically be armed with a shield, javelin and short sword. Roman legionaries served as a source of labour as well as their role as trained soldiers, with a significant portion of the infrastructure which connected the Roman empire having been built by legionaries. They would act to keep the peace among civilian populations, with high ranking legionaries also acting as judges to settle disputes in the local populace. |

Vulcan at Ascension, 1982 by Ivan Berryman ( PC) During the Falklands conflict in 1982, the tiny mid-Atlantic volcanic island of Ascension became the starting point for the Black Buck missions - a relay of tanker aircraft refuelling two Vulcan bombers to attack Argentine positions and damage the runway at Port Stanley to prevent the use of fast jets. At the time these were the longest range bombing missions in history. Additional colour added to enhance this previously black and white image. |

The Battle of Lexington by William Barnes Wollen (PC) The first fight for independence of the American Revolution. The Battle of Lexington, known as Lexington Common, is where the opening shots of the American Revolution of 1775 took place. The Common had been purchased by subscription of some of the towns leading citizens in 1711. The engagement took place oon April 19th 1775. Lt Col Francis Smith wiith 700 men under his command was given secret orders to capture and destroy military supplies that were reportedly stored by the Massachusetts militia at Concord. But Patriot colonials had received word weeks before the expedition that their supplies might be at risk, and had moved the supplies to other stores. They were also given word that the British were on their way and a rapid deployment of the militia was undertaken. The first shots were fired just as the sun was rising at Lexington. The Minutemen were outnumbered and withdrew, as the British proceeded on to Concord. At the North Bridge in Concord they were meet by a force of several hundred militiamen who defeated the British three companies of the Kings troops, who withdrew More Minutemen arrived soon thereafter and inflicted heavy damage on the regulars as they marched back towards Boston. Upon returning to Lexington, Smiths expedition was rescued by reinforcements. The whole British force of some 1700 men withdrew back to Boston. |

These confrontations often involved raids, ambushes, and coordinated attacks designed to protect their homelands and disrupt settler expansion. |

(PC) Native American trappers played a crucial role in the fur trade leveraging their deep knowledge of the land and trapping skills to harvest valuable furs, particularly beaver pelts. They often worked independently or in small groups, using traditional methods and techniques passed down through generations. Native American trappers were key intermediaries in trade networks, exchanging furs with European settlers and traders for goods such as firearms, metal tools, and textiles. |

The Boy Hero of HMS Chester (PC) John Travers Cornwell was a British naval cadet who became a posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC) for his bravery during the Battle of Jutland in May 1916. At just 16 years old, he served on the HMS Chester, a light cruiser that was heavily engaged in the battle. During the action, Cornwell was manning a gun when the ship was struck and suffered severe casualties. Despite being wounded and under fire he continued to serve at his post, showing exceptional courage and determination. Unfortunately, he died from his injuries shortly after the battle. |

(PC) The 20th Chasseurs riding behind the 3rd Army-Corps entering into Berlin after the Battle of Jena, on the afternoon of the 25th of October 1806. The Imperial Army used this opportunity to recuperate and replenish rations after a series of bloody bottles against the Prussian Army. |
