The Thames Looking Towards St Pauls by Graeme Lothian. Seen from the Royal Festival Hall the Oxo Tower stands on the South Bank. On the north side can be seen St Pauls Cathedral, which was finished in 1710. Also Sion College and HMS President. Pleasure craft and working boats continuously make their way up and down the Thames which is tidal. In front of the Oxo Tower during the summer weekends , when the tide is out, hundreds of people gather to picnic or kick a ball around. |

Thames View from the top of St Pauls by Graeme Lothian. Built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1675 and finished 35 years later to replace the earlier one which was destroyed by fire in 1666. Its 365 foot high dome is only slightly smaller than St Peters in Rome. Viewed from the top looking west one can see the bend in the River Thames. Below is Blackfriars Bridge, opened by Queen Victoria in 1869. The south bank view includes the Royal Festival Hall and Oxo Tower complexs. In the distance Waterloo Bridge and Charing Cross railway station can be viewed as can the London Eye and parts of the Houses of Parliament. |
In Remembrance by Michael Turner. The official commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of Bomber Command was marked by a moving service in St.Pauls Cathedral on 24th April 2002, attended by over 1500 surviving WWII bomber crews and personnel. At the end of the service, those present emerged onto the steps of the Cathedral to hear the unmistakable sound of four Merlin engines approaching, and at precisely 12.20pm the BBMF Lancaster flew over the assembled crowd who burst into spontaneous applause - a fitting and emotive tribute to the sacrifice and dedication of so many. |
