Air Commodore John Townesend CBE

Canadian Ernest John Dennis Townesend was a member of No.21 Sqn from 28th December 1915 to 30th July 1916. He flew in the RE7 two seater aircraft as an observer for Lieutenant Roger Neville who was an Ace with 5 victories during World War One. Townesend joined No.60 Squadron in March 1917 but was taken prisoner just a month later, remaining in captivity until January 1918. He remained in the RAF in a number of senior roles until the end of World War Two, retiring with the rank of Air Commodore in 1946. He died on 13th October 1975.

We know from our signature source that he was signing memorabilia at air shows etc as late as 1974.
