U-47 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Under the command of Günther Prien, the deadly U-47 became the 10th most successful U-Boat of World War Two in terms of tonnage sunk. However, on 8th October 1939 she sank the British battleship HMS Royak Oak within Scapa Flow, the main British naval base of the war, despite the anti-submarine measures in place. The submarine was presumed lost with all hands when she failed to return from her 10th patrol in March 1941, although no definitive explanation for her loss exists. |
One Minute to Juno by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Landing craft head for Juno Beach in northern France on 6th June 1944 in support of the British landings at Sword Beach, packed with Royal Marine Commandos and the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. Aside from their flanking action for the offensive on Caen, their mission was to capture the airfield at Carpiquet, but they would first have to drive through the defenses of two battalions of the German 716th Infantry and elements of the 21st Panzer Division. |
Assault from the Deep by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Sitting menacingly at a depth of 15 metres below the surface, just 2 km outside the heavily defended harbour of Alexandria, the Italian submarine Scire is shown releasing her three manned torpedoes, or Maiali, at the outset of their daring raid in which the British battleships HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Valiant and a tanker, were severely damaged on 3rd December 1941. All six crew members of the three Maiali survived the mission, but all were captured and taken prisoner. Luigi Durand de la Penne and Emilio Bianchi can be seen moving away aboard 221, whilst Vincenzo Martellotta and Mario Marino (222) carry out systems checks. Antonio Marceglia and Spartaco Schergat, on 223, are heading away at the top of the picture. |

U-107 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The German Type IXB U-Boat U-107 completed 13 active patrols between 1941 and 1944, well above the average lifespan for a U-boat during this period. U-107 sunk 39 ships with a total tonnage in excess of 200,000 tons. Shown here under attack from a Sunderland, this would be her ultimate demise. On 18th August 1944, Sunderland EJ150 of No.201 Sqn sunk the U-Boat with depth charges in the Bay of Biscay with the loss of the entire crew. |

One Way Trip by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Having strung their deadly payload from the bilge keels of another victim, the two man crew of an Italian SLC, or Maiale, prepare to make their getaway in the murky waters of an Allied harbour in the early part of WW2. Having set clamps on the bilge keels, the nose of the manned torpedo was detached and suspended on a steel cable strung between the clamps. A timer was set in motion and, a little over two hours later, the resulting explosion would rip through the ship's hull. Such was the fate of the British battleships HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Valiant as they lay in the harbour at Alexandria on 3rd December 1941. The fate of the frogmen was rarely a good one, most attacks resulting in almost certain capture - and often death - as there was no way back to the 'mother' submarine and they were forced to make their own way to whatever sanctuary they could find, having completed their audacious mission. |

The Final Salvo - HMS Hood by Anthony Saunders. (PC) HMS Hood readies to fire off a what proved to be the final salvo against the Bismarck before a shell from the German battleship penetrated the magazine of HMS Hood, tearing apart the British ship in an enormous explosion. |
Tribute to Ian Edward Fraser VC by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Joined the Royal Naval Reserve in 1939, and served on several destroyers before joining HMS Sahib in 1943 - the same year he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for bravery and skill on submarine patrols. He volunteered for sevice aboard HMS Bonaventure - a depot ship for X-Craft midget submarines. Commander of the midget submarine HMS XE-3 in the successful attack on a the Japanese Atago Class heavy cruiser Takao, moored in Johore Strait, Singapore, 31st July 1945. HMS XE-3 is seen here making its way to its target on that day. Fraser and his diver - James Magennis who went out to place the limpet mines - were both awarded the Victoria Cross for this attack. He died on 1st September 2008. |
Prinz Eugen by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The German Heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen is depicted in a quiet moment at Gotenhaven in April 1941 whilst engaged in exercises with her consort, the mighty Bismarck that would eventually lead to Operation Rheinubung,. Bismarck herself is alongside in the distance, where final preparations for their foray into the North sea and beyond are being made. |
Prelude to Taranto by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Prior to the British attack on the Italian battle fleet moored in Taranto Harbour in November 1940, the job of obtaining the very latest photo reconnaissance fell to the maverick pilot Adrian 'Warby' Warburton. Flying a requisitioned Martin Maryland, Warburton undertook a series of breathtakingly low level passes across the ships moored in the harbour, cheating a hail of anti aircraft fire and flak to bring home the vital information to Rear Admiral Lumley Lyster, the flag officer aboard HMS Illustrious. Ships shown moored in the Mar Grande here are Vittorio Veneto (nearest) and Littorio with Duilio and Giulio Cesare in the background. |
The Attack on the Admiral Hipper by HMS Glowworm by Ivan Berryman. (PC) HMS Glowworm, burning severely after receiving hits from the mighty Admiral Hipper, is depicted turning to begin her heroic sacrifice off the Norwegian coast on 8th April 1940. Hugely out-gunned and already crippled, Glowworms captain, Lieutenant-Commander Roope rammed his destroyer into the side of the Admiral Hipper, inflicting a 40 metre rip in its armour belt before drifting away and exploding. 38 British sailors were rescued from the sea and Roope was awarded a posthumous VC for his bravery, the first earned by the Royal Navy in WWII. |

Into the Storm by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Typical of the many hundreds of craft that took part in the 6th June 1944 landings at Normandy at the opening of Operation Overlord, these unarmed Royal Navy Landing Craft (LCAs) bravely transported many thousands of British and Canadian infantry to the beaches under the most intense fire. |
