HMS Onslaught by Ivan Berryman. (PC) With her pennant number GO4 painted out to accommodate a western approaches camouflage the destroyer HMS Onslaught punches her way through a heavy swell during escort duties in the north Atlantic. |
The Raid on Pearl Harbor, 7th December 1941 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The view across Battleship Row, viewed from above Ford Island as the USS Nevada gallantly makes her break for the open sea, coming under heavy attack from Japanese A6M2s from the carrier Hiryu. The Nevada was eventually too badly damaged to continue and was beached to avoid blocking the harbour entrance. In the immediate foreground, the lightly damaged USS Tennessee is trapped inboard of USS West Virginia which has sunk at her moorings, leaking burning oil and hampering the daring operations to pluck trapped crew members from her decks, while just visible to the right is the stern of the USS Maryland and the capsized Oklahoma. |
The Pedestal Convoy - HMS Indomitable by Anthony Saunders. (PC) The Pedestal Convoy, to provide desperately needed supplies to the beleaguered Mediterranean island of Malta in August 1942, was perhaps one of the most famous and strategically important convoys of World War II. It had a powerful escort, including three aircraft carriers, one of which was HMS Indomitable. Closely escorted by the cruiser HMS Sirius, she came under heavy attack from both German and Italian bombers on the 12th of August 1942 and was eventually forced to turn back after bomb damage put her flight deck out of action. |

Dunkirk by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Between 24th may and 4th June 1940 an extraordinary armada of craft, large and small, naval and civilian, embarked on one of the greatest rescue missions in history. the evacuation of 330,000 British and French troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in northern France. the destroyer HMS Shikari dominates the foreground here as troops pour onto the beaches and harbour moles in search of salvation. MTB are seen picking up troops and taking them to ships further out including MTB102. Also shown is a paddle steamer with very shallow draft taking on troops close to the beach and in the distance HMS Grafton can be seen taking troops from the mole. She was lost later during the evacuation. |
U-997 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) A Type VIIC U-boat, U-997 was one of lucky ones to survive the war. One of around 700 of the Type VIIs - the workhorse of the German U-boat threat - it was an example of the 91 Type VIIC/41 variety, one of which is the only surviving Type VII in existence (U-995 is a memorial in Germany). U-997 served between September 1943 and the end of the war when the submarine was surrendered and subsequently sunk by Allied aircraft with more than 100 other U-boats during Operation Deadlight, north-west of Ireland. |
Exchange of Fire by Ivan Berryman. (PC) A veteran of the Spanish Civil War, Lieutenant Commander Carlo Fecia Conte di Cossato was one of the most successful and formidable Italian submarine commanders of WWII. In charge of the Tazzoli , he destroyed almost 18,000 tons of shipping on his first mission, steadily adding to this total as they prowled the Atlantic. The Tazzoli is depicted as its tenacious crew retaliate with machine gun fire against a marauding Bristol Beaufort of 217 Sqn on 23rd May 1941, an encounter that left both protagonists with some damage. |
The Wreck of the Empress Queen by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On 3rd February 1916, P.S. Empress Queen, which had been requisitioned by the Royal Navy for war duties, was returning to Southampton from Cherbourg with 1,300 men on board when she struck the ledge at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight and was carried high onto the rocks by the rising tide. The Bembridge lifeboat Queen Victoria (ON468) was immediately in sttendance and, as the weather worstened managed to rescue the remaining 110 men on board over the course of four trips, most of the troops having been evacuated onto destroyers. The Queen Victoria was damaged on the rocks on her third trip, but managed one more rescue to remove the crew. For his heroism, Coxwain John Holbrook was awarded the RNLI Silver Medal. The Empress Queen was never re-floated and she eventually disintegrated on the rocks. |
Tribute to the Crew of HMS Truant by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Commissioned in October 1939, HMS Truant served in the North Sea for almost a year, notably damaging the German cruiser Karlsruhe in one action. Sent to the Mediterranean, Truant sunk several Axis merchant ships here, including the Italian tanker Bonzo depicted in this painting. Tracked off the east coast of Italy in the dark of 15th - 16th December 1940, Bonzo fell prey to one of three torpedoes, and was finished off from close range, sinking rapidly. HMS Truant continued successful patrols in the Med until May 1941, completing an Atlantic crossing for refit in the United States before returning in October that year. Sent to the Far East in 1942, the submarine returned to the UK around the Cape of Good Hope for another refit. Returning to service in UK waters in mid-1943, Truant was again sent to the Far East, making it as far as Malta before turning back with mechanical issues, spending the rest of the war as a trials ship in the United Kingdom. |

In the foreground, a motor launch attends a group of LCP (L)s as they head for the French beaches. Two Spitfire Mk.IXs conduct sweeps overhead as Operation Neptune gathers momentum. |

Hunter's Dusk by Ivan Berryman. (PC) In January 1941, the young Mario Arillo was appointed the rank of Lieutenant Commander, placed in charge of the Regia Marina's submarine Ambra and was dispatched to the Mediterranean to help disrupt supplies to the Allied forces. In May of that same year, Arillo attacked the British Dido Class Cruiser HMS Bonaventure, and Destroyers HMS Hereward and HMS Stuart, south of Crete, en route from Alexandria, the cruiser Bonaventure being sunk with great loss of life. The Ambra is depicted here in a calmer moment, two of her crew scanning the horizon for 'business'. |

She is shown at dawn as two type VII U-Boats glide towards her for a friendly rendezvous and to take on much needed supplies, as well as a few of the luxuries that the tiny u-boats were simply too small to carry. |

U-861 - Tribute to Jürgen Oesten by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Launched in 1943, U-861 was a Type IXD2 submarine commanded by Jürgen Oesten. Having previously commanded U-61 and U-106 successfully, he took U-861 to the Far East on a journey that took several months, sinking ships off Brazil and Madagascar on the way. Returning in early 1945, the submarine struck an iceberg off Greenland but managed to reach Trondheim in Norway without any casualties. Here, the U-boat was surrendered. Scuttled off the north of Ireland by the Allies, the wreck is now a dive site. Jürgen Oesten was awarded the Knight's Cross and sunk a shipping tonnage in excess of 100,000. He died in 2010. |
HMS Courageous by Randall Wilson (PC) Two Stringbags (Fairey Swordfish) pass across the bow of HMS Courageous as she staggers from torpedo strikes launched from a German U-Boat in the Irish Sea. On 17th September 1939 HMS Courageous was struck by two torpedoes from the German submarine U-29 about 190 nautical miles south-west of Dursey Head, Ireland. HMS Courageous sank in less than 16 minutes with the loss of 519 lives, including her commander Captain W T Makeig-Jones. Her total complement was 1,260 officers and ratings and two squadrons of Fairey Swordfish aircraft (48 planes). The sinking of the HMS Courageous was the first U-boat offensive against the Royal Navy, and more importantly, Schuhart's victory prompted the Admiralty to withdraw all three remaining carriers from the Western Approaches. |
USS Tennessee During the Landings at Iwo Jima by Anthony Saunders. (PC) In February 1945, 850 square miles of volcanic rock became the most strategically important island in the South Pacific. From Iwo Jima heavy bombers would be able to raid Japanese cities almost at will. Even with its overwhelming military might, the Americans would have to pay a heavy price for such a seemingly small island. |
