Below is an example of a print that has been damaged and has had signatures clipped. This is where most of our clipped signatures come from. This example is Fighter General by Graeme Lothian and the signatures clipped include Peter Duttmann and Walter Krupinski.

Clipped Signature - Gerald Moreby. He was part of the crew of a No.88 Sqn Sunderland flying boat which went to the aid of HMS Amethyst during the Yangtze Incident in 1949. Over three days they landed a doctor and medical aid to the ship under a heavy barrage of fire - the aircraft was hit several times and damaged but remained airworthy. |
Clipped Signature - Walter Loos. Walter Loos was one of the last German Experten. He came as a newly trained pilot to the III./JG3 in January 1944, and was one of the few new pilots of 1944 who survived the war. He claimed his first aerial victory during a fierce aerial battle when the 8th US Air Force attacked Berlin on 6th March 1944. While with the Sturmgruppe IV./JG3, he downed several four-engine bombers and was hand picked by Walther Dahl for Geschwaderstab /JG300. Loos made a great success as a Sturmflieger, but was himself shot down nine times in only a few months. Sta/JG301 was equipped with the Ta152, the most modern propeller fighter, in order to protect the bases of the jet fighters from spring 1945. It was natural to include Loos in this unit. On 24th April 1945, Loos encountered a formation of Soviet fighters over Berlin and managed to down two of them. In spite of flying only 66 missions, he was credited with 38 confirmed victories, including 30 four-engine bombers, plus 8 unconfirmed victories. Six days later on 30th April, JG301 took off for their last battle of the war. Russian fighters attacked the formation and Loos shot down one Yak-9 - one of the last two victories claimed by JG301. That was his 38th victory. While 38 victories for WW2 German fighter pilots was not a huge number, when one considers that over 100 aces achieved over 100 victories, it is outstanding when one considers that Loos achieved his 38 victories in only 66 missions. Few pilots in history have achieved that ratio of kills to sorties. |

Clipped Signature - Hank Cervantes. Lt Col. Henry Cervantes joined the US Air Force, graduated on the 27th June 1944 and was one of only a few Mexican American Pilots, of The Bloody 100th Bombardment Group flying B-17s. On 18th March 1945 he flew on the last Eighth Air Force mission to Berlin, and on 7th April got home safely after his B-17 E-Z Goin' was badly damaged in a head-on attack by Me109s of Rammkommando Elbe. |
Clipped Signature - Walter Schuck. Initially flew with JG3 then JG5 from 1942, scoring 198 victories including 12 within 24 hours. He scored a further 8 victories flying the Me262 jet with JG7 and was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. He died in 2015. |

Clipped Signature - Tex Hill. A pilot with American Volunteer Group, he had scored 12.25 victories by the time it disbanded. He joined the 23rd Fighter Group and later the 412th Fighter Group flying jets. This highly decorated pilot died in 2007. |
Clipped Signature - Karl Rubmeyer. Joined the Luftwaffe in 1940 flying the He111, Ju86, Ju88, captured French Saiman 202, Caudron 405, and the Mistel combination. He served with KG30 and KG200 where he flew the Mistel. He attained the rank of Feldwebel and received the Iron Cross Class 2. Clipped Signature - Graham Blacklock. Completed a tour on Wellingtons by July 1940 then flew Stirling bombers with No.7 Sqn. On a mission to Bremen, his aircraft was attacked - his skill allowed his gunners to shoot down one, possibly two of the enemy fighters. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for going back to escort a second bomber and spending time looking for survivors after the crippled aircraft eventually ditched, despite the danger. He retired in 1961 as Group Captain. He died in 2011. |
Clipped Signature - Edward Kenna VC. Serving in the Citizen Military Forces in Australia from 1940, he was posted to New Guinea in 1944. On 15th May 1945 he single-handedly attacked a machine gun bunker with his Bren gun and a rifle while exposed to the enemy fire, earning the Victoria Cross. He died in 2009. Clipped Signature - Walter Briegleb. A Luftwaffe night-fighter pilot who scored 25 victories flying the Ju88 with NJG2 and NJG3. He was awarded the Iron Cross Second Class and First Class and the German Cross in Gold. |
Clipped Signature - Erwin Kressmann. A Knight's Cross winning tank commander in Panzerjager Abteilung 519. He died in 2017. |
Clipped Signature - Pat Fillingham. A test pilot who worked for the de Havilland company, he flew more than 120 different types of aircraft, including wartime work on the Mosquito. He became Chief Production Test Pilot in 1959, retiring in 1975. He died in 2003. Please note that this particular signature has been written in pen - not in pencil like most of our signatures. |
Clipped Signature - Sir John Lapsley. Commanded No.274 Sqn in Malta in 1941 flying the Gladiator and Hurricane. He was shot down and repatriated to recover, later commanding No.125 Wing on the Typhoon scoring a total of 11 victories in the war. He died in 1995. Clipped Signature - Peter Cremer. A U-Boat commander who sunk 6 ships. He died in 1992. |
Clipped Signature - 'Tommy' Thompson. Joined No.85 Sqn flying Hurricanes in September 1940, then moved to No.249 Sqn claiming an Me109. Flew from HMS Ark Royal when the squadron moved to Malta in 1941 and flew night missions, later joining No.73 Sqn in the Western Desert. After the war he flew commercially for BOAC and British Airways until 1975. He died in 2008. |
Clipped Signature - Wilhelm Alsen. Joined the German Navy and within a year was a gunner on the battleship Scharnhorst. When the battleship was sunk in 1943, just 36 of a crew of almost 2,000 were rescued - Wilhelm Alsen was the 36th. He served the remainder of the war as a prisoner. |
Clipped Signature - David Ince. David Ince trained on Hurricanes and Mustangs before flying Typhoons with No.193 Sqn and No.257 Sqn. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross after completing almost 150 sorties. Post war he completed an engineering degree. He died aged 96 in 2017. Clipped alongside the signature of John Shellard - John Shellard flew Typhoons with No.263 Sqn, claiming a share of a victory over an Me262 jet in April 1944 while on a ground attack mission. |
Clipped Signature - Sandy Thomas. At 24 he became the youngest Commander of a New Zealand Infantry Battalion at war. He fought in Greece and escaped from a prison hospital in Crete. Awarded the Military Cross with Bar and Distinguished Service Order, he rose to the rank of Major General by retirement in 1971. He died aged 98 in 2017. One Available Only. Clipped Signature - Arthur R Milow. Arthur R Milow - Commanding Officer of the 643rd Bomb Squadron, 409th Bomb Group, he flew 66 combat missions in the A-20 Havoc and A-26 Invader, including on D-Day itself and in the Battle of the Bulge. He died in 2012. Wayne E Downing - A pilot on the A-20 Havoc with the 416th Bomb Group, he flew missions D-Day. He later converted to the A-26 Invader, completing a total of 86 combat missons. Post-war he stayed with the Air Force flying the B-47 and B-52 until 1962, becoming a maths teacher after leaving the service. He died in 2018. Ralph F Conte - A bombardier / navigator with the 416th Bomb Group, he flew his first mission on 4th March 1944. Flying a total of 65 combat missions in the A-20 Havoc and A-26 Invader, he was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded by flak on 18th July 1944. He died in 2016. |
Clipped Signature - Harbourne Stephen. Flew Spitfires with No.605 Sqn over France and Dunkirk before fighting in the Battle of Britain, and had scored 22.5 victories by the end of 1940. He took command of 166 Wing in the Far East until the end of the war, then had a career in newspapers, becoming managing director of the Daily Telegraph. He died in 2001. |
