A Captain of the East Surrey Regiment attached to the Somali Mounted Infantry, he defended a hill position from heavy Italian forces for five days despite malaria and injuries, until it was over run. Reported killed, he was awarded the Victoria Cross - in fact he had been captured and imprisoned. He died in 2008. Eric Charles Twelves Wilson VC (deceased) *Signature Value : £40	Captain and later Lieutenant Colonel of the East Surrey Regiment attached to Somali Mounted Infantry. From the 11th to 15th August 1940, Eric Wlson took part in an engagement with heavy Italian forces in British Somaliland. A company of Somaliland Camel Corps with Wilson in charge were manning gun posts on 'Observatoon Hill', an important position in the Allied defensive line. Under fierce enemy attacks, direct hits twice knocked Wilson's gun off its mountings. Wilson and his men remounted the gun and made a gallant defence, keeping Italian forces at bay. For five days, Wilson held his position while suffering from malaria and untended wounds until eventually with overwhelming odds the position was over-ran in a final Italian charge. Captain Wilson fought to the last and was reported killed in action. This was announced in the citation for the award of a Victoria Cross for Wilson. Thankfully, the announcement proved to be incorrect, as Captain Wilson had been captured and sent to a prisoner of war camp in Eritrea. For this reason, Eric Wilson holds the bizarre distinction of being the only living recipient of a posthumously awarded Victoria Cross. He died aged 96 on 23rd December 2008.
